The English Mastiff
English Mastiffs are the largest breed dog in the world. weighing up to and over 200lbs when full grown. These dogs don't live for a very long time usually 8-12 years. Mastiffs are noted for a few health health problems most importantly of which is gastrointestinal problems. You should always elevate their food win feeding them to keep them from developing complications. despite their unique health issues these dogs are amazing animals. They are very friendly and rarely ever bark. Mastiffs are eager to please their masters, and are quite easy to train however training them does take patience as they are quite slow to respond to commands. I've heard it said that they respond on "mastiff time" meaning several seconds after you have told them what to do. Feeding a mastiff costs between 50 - 75 dollars a month depending on the diet you choose for them. I feed my Puppy Purina Beneful and I pay about 60 bucks a month for food. Mastiffs don't need much in the way of shelter they are quite happy with just having something to lay on or a couple pieces of ply wood nailed up. They are very hearty, and are not to effected by cold temperatures. In the heat they tend to just lay about all day. These dogs are also not very needy in the department of exercise. A short walk here or there keeps them more than happy. It's important to keep them from jumping up when they are puppies because when they are full grown they could knock guests over, but aside from that they are great around people, children and other animals. They shed quite a bit in the late spring early summer, but the rest of the year their hair stays where it's at. One of the grossest parts of owning a Mastiff is after eating or drinking they become a slobber machine for about an hour. Everything in their path during feeding time becomes cover in drool. Mastiffs are great pets all around but their size is something that needs to be dealt with, but as long as you know what you are getting into these dogs are amazing pets. A pure breed puppy goes for between 2 and 3 thousand dollars so be sure before you look into buying this dog, but once you do I know you will be pleased!

I almost bought one of these!
Enormous dog. I think you are right to teach him not to jump. It is not only the people, I think he will be able to roll a car over. Imagine having to buy a new car every second month, just for the "dogs" of it.lol
We have a english mastiff female she is 7 months old now.We used to have yellow labs so we are used to the drool and water drinking.Three months ago the wife and I went out to lunch, when we got back my wife said the dog ate my norelco electric razor, sure enough what was left of my razor was in her bed.We looked all over for the parts but we didnt find all of them, so I took her to the vet had her x-rayed and there they were, all 3 rotary blades 1 blade cover a spring and a couple small parts. They induced her to throw up and there they were.I love this dog more every day.

Interesting. As they are such large dogs do they have joint problems in later life?
